Ambassador Rüdiger König is since August 2013 the Deputy Director General for UN-Affairs in the Foreign Office in Berlin. From 2010 until 2013, he was the German Ambassador in Kabul (Afghanistan) and from 2008 until 2010 he was the Head of the Special Task Force on Afghanistan and Pakistan in the Foreign Office. From 2006 until 2008, he was based in Brussels and the Director General for Political Affairs at the Permanent Representation of Germany at the NATO. Earlier and among others, he was the Head of former Federal President Rau’s Office in Berlin.
In 2001 he was a member of the German Delegation at the Petersberg Conference for Afghanistan and from 1997 until 1999, he was the Desk officer for Afghanistan at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Pakistan, based in Islamabad.
He joined the Foreign Office in 1986. He studied Political Science, International Law and Sociology at the University of Bonn.
